What is IVF with Egg Donation and Gender Selection?

Couples wishing to select the gender of their baby when the female partner is unable to conceive (due to fertility problems related to egg production), may find IVF with egg donation and gender selection treatment a viable option.

Egg donation, also known as oocyte donation or ovum donation, is the process by which eggs from a third party donor are fertilized with sperm outside the womb (in-vitro fertilization) and then transferred into the uterus of the patient who is trying to conceive. Many women are unable to conceive due to fertility problems related to egg production, such as cancer, autoimmune disease, Turner Syndrome, congenital absence of eggs, premature menopause, or premature ovarian failure. Egg donors should be between the ages of 20-30. Egg donors can be known donors, chosen by the patient, or an unknown donor, in which case the recipient mother would give her fertility care center the necessary criteria for the selection process. The cost of IVF with egg donation can be very costly in most developed countries, which is why individuals choose to travel for IVF treatment with egg donation, due to the high quality health care and affordable rates in most developing nations.

Gender Selection, also known as sex selection or family balancing, as an infertility treatment, refers to the selection of an offspring's sex before implantation of the embryo into the womb via in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Some couples prefer to choose the gender of their offspring for a variety of reasons. A couple may opt for gender selection to avoid a “sex linked” genetic disease, such as Hemophilia. Others may desire to choose the sex of their baby to balance with the gender of their already existent offspring. There are two methods of gender selection used today, sperm sorting, also known as Microsort technology, and preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD).
