What is Dental Cyst Removal?

Dental cysts are growths in the mouth that occur due to infection, disease of the gum tissue or an infection in the pulp chambers of the teeth. There are four types of dental or oral cysts that require cyst removal:

· A periapical cyst occurs if tooth decay causes the death of pulp tissues and the infection spreads to the surrounding gum tissue.

· A keratocyst is a cyst that grows inside the jawbone itself and can be difficult to remove and diagnose.

· Often painless, dentigerous cysts appear in the areas surrounding impacted wisdom teeth. This type of cyst can cause additional damage by altering the positioning of teeth.

· Primordial cyst develops in the place of a tooth; however this type of cyst is extremely rare. Each type of dental cyst is removed in the same way.

A Good Candidate for Dental Cyst Removal

All dental cysts must be removed to prevent structural damage to the teeth, so any patient with an oral cyst should have this procedure.

Dental Cyst Removal Procedure

The location, type and size of the cyst will determine how the cyst is removed. After every cyst removal a biopsy of the cyst will be taken and sent to a dental laboratory for analysis.

The length of time needed for cyst removal will depend on the size of the cyst and the location of the cyst in the mouth. Most oral cysts can be removed in 1 hour.

The mouth is numbed using a local anesthesia during the cyst removal procedure. Once the cyst has been removed and the swelling has subsided there will be immediate comfort.
